Testing times

In these testing times I just wanted to remind you that the RP forums are still operational if you want a virtual hangout of sorts which is limited to this group of old (and strong) friends.

If you want to get involved (and I think it would be nice if we did), and are having trouble accessing (maybe your email has changed and you can't remember your password - it's been quite a while after all!), please let me know via text or email or any other means, and I'll sort you out.

I know it's not the ideal platform for mobile use which I imagine is the vastly prevailing method people use this newfangled interwebs nowadays (bloody kids), and it's not as convenient as mashing a 'like' button, but I believe it has a place in the world just as it always did - and hopefully I'll see you here soon.

All the best, James.

Filters

Two thoughts on filters (the kind applied to photographs):

Theres going to be a massive market in the future for software to remove filters - making your only surviving picture of that holiday not look like it was shot through the bottom of a coke bottle; de-film-grain-and-scratch those wedding photos; remove the stupid rabbit ears and nose from the favourite baby photo etc.

The filters that add animal features or other face-mapping stuff to selfies are both technically amazing, and at the same time a gateway drug to rampant narcissism. Silent self-justification for taking so many selfies (because they add the cute animal features), soon slips into normal behaviour.

A real-life Cluedo mystery

I never understood in Cluedo how some of the methods/weapons of the murder could be confused - to me it seems likely that you could tell poisoning apart from a shooting (I know, I know, it's just part of the game...).

But now the BBC is reporting that our beloved Police force may have had the same issue - in this story: John 'Goldfinger' Palmer 'killed by professional gunman':

QUOTE

Palmer had recently had surgery and it was initially thought he had suffered a cardiac arrest.

and

QUOTE

A week later, a post-mortem examination found the convicted conman had been shot in the chest six times, which prompted an investigation by the police watchdog.

I'm sure there's more to this story (please god there's more to this story...), than managing to overlook 6 gunshot woulds to the chest, but as it's reported at the moment, I'm struggling to see how...

Loss of control of online identity

From Redesigning Waxy, 2016 edition by Andy Baio:

QUOTE

More people than ever before are able to express themselves on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Medium, YouTube, Pinterest, and countless other social platforms. All of that is great.

But there a few reasons why I’m sad about the decline of independent blogging, and why I think they’re still worth fighting for.

Ultimately, it comes down to two things: ownership and control.

Last week, Twitter announced they’re shutting down Vine. Twitter, itself, may be acquired and changed in some terrible way. It’s not hard to imagine a post-Verizon Yahoo selling off Tumblr. Medium keeps pivoting, trying to find a successful revenue model. There’s no guarantee any of these platforms will be around in their current state in a year, let alone ten years from now.

Here, I control my words. Nobody can shut this site down, run annoying ads on it, or sell it to a phone company. Nobody can tell me what I can or can’t say, and I have complete control over the way it’s displayed. Nobody except me can change the URL structure, breaking 14 years of links to content on the web.

I think this is a great point, but there so much more to the problems with the current social media/self publishing landscape. It's great that there are free and wildly popular tools out there which people use to keep in contact with each other and communicate their thoughts (even if the vast majority is recycling other peoples nonsense and monumental narcissism), but as ever the problem with 'free' services is that someone is paying, and in most cases that someone is advertisers, which makes the user the product to be sold.
